Supporting Heart Health for Women on Long Island

What better feature for this color issue of Healthy Living Digest than the “Go Red for Women” movement?

We thought it would be very fitting to include information about American Heart Month and to let readers know that if they missed National Wear Red Day last week, they can still come decked out to the 2012 Go Red For Women Long Island event.

On the first Friday in February, women across Long Island and Queens as well as corporations, businesses, hospitals, towns, schools, local and state legislators, members of the media and teachers, wear red to focus attention on the number 1 killer of women, cardiovascular disease.

To bring a sense of fun into this serious effort, the American Heart Association poses the question “How do you go red?” People are challenged to wear red in their own fashion by wearing a red dress, scarf, jacket, shirt, tie, hat or other item. This is to show support for all women who have been touched by heart disease or stroke.

Business owner’s mother is the inspiration for the fund-raising snacks

Volunteers and staff of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support welcomed a Pink Snacks truck at their location in Garden City on Wednesday, Jan. 25, as the breast cancer hotline number, 800-877-8077, will now be displayed on Pink Snacks trucks and snack bags.

Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline offers emotional support and information to people. Of their 100 trained volunteers, most are breast cancer survivors. Their main goal is to “educate, support, empower and advocate for breast cancer patients, professionals and the community.”

Pink Snacks, a company that manufactures potato chips, potato sticks and pretzels, exists to raise funds and create awareness in support of breast cancer organizations. Seventy percent of the proceeds are donated to the National Breast Cancer Coalition. Businessman Damon Greco, whose work is based in Pennsylvania, created Pink Snacks (www.pinksnacks forthecure.com) to honor the life of his mother Nancy Ann who succumbed to inflammatory breast cancer in September 2010.

Being Thankful and Giving Can Actually Improve Your Health

As we begin the New Year with resolutions to be healthier, one simple step is just to learn a lesson from the holiday season we all just enjoyed. New research is suggesting that a positive attitude can actually be positive for your health. Specifically, both the gratitude we foster at Thanksgiving, and the spirit of giving that follows for Christmas and Hanukkah, are important to maintain all year. Two Long Island professionals are working to prove the benefits.
