Patrick Lynn Pitches A No-Hitter

Patrick Lynn, pitcher for the NSHS Vikings varsity baseball team, pitched a no-hitter at a game against West Hempstead. He had 10 strikeouts and two walks. The last time a no-hitter was pitched was in 2004.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Speedy’s Corner: May 17, 2012

This week commences with another exciting season of Speedy’s Corner, summarizing results of the Glen Cove Junior Baseball/Softball League. However, before I begin, I need to mention a few of my heartfelt feelings for an amazing man, the late Rob Kormoski. Speedy would dare say that no one had ever known a more hardworking volunteer on our local baseball/softball fields than Rob. Over the last several years, Rob was a familiar sight on his cart running between games making sure every little nuance was taken care of, every issue resolved. It is only fitting that the league be renamed after him and his name memorialized on his golf cart. Rob would have it no other way. I also know that the Junior Baseball/Softball board of directors will do everything in its power to continue the hard work Rob performed in his 19 years of volunteer service. God speed, my friend. You’ve earned it!

St. Boniface Sixth-Graders Win CYO Division A Championship

The St. Boniface Sixth-Grade Girls Basketball team won the CYO Division A Championship after a strong season. The girls fought hard in the final against St. Hugh of Huntington and ultimately won the title by a score of 28-24. This win led to the opportunity to play in the CYO Classic against the Brooklyn/Queens Class A Champion. St. Boniface was, again, victorious winning by an 11-point margin.

Play Ball!

The Glen Cove Junior Baseball and Softball League held their annual parade in Glen Cove on a hot and sunny Saturday, and then held their opening day ceremony. The Junior Baseball and Softball League board of directors voted to rename the league after Robin Kormoski, so it will now be known as the Robin “Rob” Kormoski Junior Baseball and Softball League of Glen Cove.

 

 

 

 

Lacrosse Summary

Late Knights Shine In Home Opener

The seventh- and eighth-grade Glen Cove Junior Lacrosse team continued their winning ways by taking their third straight victory on Sunday, April 22. The boys entered the game on a two-game winning streak as they were set to play Point Lookout/Lido in their home opener.

Glen Cove came out on fire and jumped out to an early lead and they never looked back. Once again Ryan Feldmann, Michael Hatala and Geoffrey Field provided most of the scoring in the 9 – 6 victory. Whether it was shooting or passing the ‘Big Mac Attack’ had their hands in on eight of the nine goals. The hustle of the midfielders and the determination of the defense seems to be the strength of the team with Sean Morrisey, Andrew Patino and Jared Buehre adding some inspiring play. Goaltender Max Sutherland was once again credited for an outstanding game between the pipes.

North Shore Wrestler Earns Second All County

On April 3, Nassau County’s All County wrestlers gathered for their end-of-the-year dinner at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Unlike other sports, no coaches voted for these athletes to receive their awards. These were earned competing head to head at the county wrestling tournament held at Hofstra in February. Only the top six wrestlers in each weight class earn All Nassau County status.

Girls Varsity Lacrosse Makes A Comeback

The Glen Cove Varsity Girls Lacrosse team entered the week with a 1 – 0 league record and ended the week with a 2 – 1 league record. The weather was cool and windy and the varsity team struggled to keep their momentum going against Herricks; they went into halftime ahead but the game got away from them in the second half and they lost 10-12.

Glen Cove’s Rugby Team Dominates Morris, NJ At Start Of Season

So far, the Glen Cove “Under 15” rugby team is off to a positive start this season.

“Two wins from two games, but there’s no let-up. We play a New Zealand style of running rugby that the spectators enjoy,” said Coach John Royal of the Glen Cove Under 15 (u15) rugby team.

Glen Cove Junior Baseball & Softball Conduct Free Clinics

The Glen Cove Junior Baseball & Softball Association (GCJB&SB) recently completed its free baseball training clinics for the kindergarten 6-year-olds in its program with Dom Gatti at the Cove Baseball Academy.

Gatti, varsity coach of the North Shore High School Vikings baseball team and former professional baseball player with the Texas Rangers organization, is renowned as one of the premier hitting instructors. Gatti also led the nation in hitting at the college level while at Adelphi University in 1993.

Glen Cove Girls Varsity Basketball Players Honored

All-County Player Nicole Alexander (senior) and Nassau County Scholar-Athlete Victoria Durso (senior) at the Crest Hollow Country Club Nassau County Awards Basketball Dinner on March 27.
