Patio Daddy-O and Livestock played to a crowd of nearly 200 at the Sea Cliff Firehouse Saturday night for the sold-out IZOTE benefit concert, which raised over $7000 in funds for people in El Salvador to get cataract surgery.
“We would like to sincerely thank Patio Daddy-O, Livestock, the Sea Cliff Firehouse, Aratas Deli and all the partygoers for making it such a fun event. All the money raised will go directly to our cataract surgery project. The party and donations by friends raised over $7000, which is enough for us to provide 150 cataract surgery operations for rural people in El Salvador,” said Risa Procton of the IZOTE foundation.
IZOTE is a nonprofit corporation that assists impoverished communities in El Salvador through projects promoting literacy, health and ecological conservation. According to Procton, by the time most El Salvadorians reach the age of 40, they have developed cataracts, and most do not have access to the operation due ill-equipped hospitals. In June, members of the organization will travel to the country after having acquired surgical eye instruments and supplies to perform operations at San Pedro Hospital.

The North Shore High School gymnasium was filled with the girls’ varsity basketball team, coaches, teachers, friends and families on Friday, Feb. 10. Not only did the girls play a terrific, fast-paced game, but also one of the players - senior point guard Amanda Johansen - had 20 points, 13 rebounds and scored her 1,000th career point that night.
There were only 40 seconds left of the second quarter when Johansen shot a free throw, bringing the team up to 44 points. When the ball went through the hoop, the fans roared, and confetti flew from the bleachers. By the end of the game the girls experienced an 85-55 win over Valley Stream North in Conference A-IV.

Director of Athletics Don Lang proudly announced that two North Shore High School senior athletes signed National Letters of Intent (NLI). A Letter of Intent is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an institution. Once signed, the institution agrees to provide that student with financial aid (if eligible under the NCAA rules) for one academic year in exchange for that student’s agreement to attend the institution for one academic year. Additionally, all colleges and universities that participate in the NLI program agree to not recruit these student athletes once he or she signs the NLI.
North Shore Director of Athletics Don Lang said, “According to NCAA guidelines, Feb. 1 is the first official day that our track runners can sign their National Letters of Intent. Congratulations go out to Samantha Nadel and Brianna Nerud who have chosen Georgetown and Syracuse University respectively to attend in the fall. They will officially commit to these two universities today.”
